Cantaloupes, also known as muskmelons, are sprawling, hairy vines with large leaves that shade the soil, and help retain moisture. Mulching with black plastic warms the soil, encouraging sweet, juicy fruit. Fruits develop 3–6 weeks after flowering and are ready to harvest when the rind changes from green to light tan or yellow and feels slightly soft. These melons produce vibrant orange flesh with a naturally sweet flavor.
