Latin Name: Ruta Graveolens

Rue is a unique, evergreen herb in the Rutaceae family, prized for its aromatic blue-green foliage, culinary uses, and traditional herbal value. Its feathery leaves and soft yellow flowers add texture to the garden while attracting pollinators and naturally deterring deer and some garden pests. Drought tolerant once established, rue thrives in well-draining soil and benefits from light spring pruning to maintain its compact shape. The fragrant leaves can be used fresh or dried in small amounts, adding a bold, pleasantly bitter flavor to Mediterranean and traditional Italian dishes, and are also valued as a natural insect repellent. Rue grows well alongside roses, raspberries, marigolds, and garlic, but should be kept away from basil, cabbage, and sage, as it may inhibit their growth.
