Growth Habit:
Large evergreen tree with strong central leader and broad pyramidal to upright-oval canopy. Branching is layered and horizontal with a fuller, more expansive crown than compact cultivars. Moderate growth rate once established.
Foliage Description:
Large, thick, leathery leaves 6–10" long. Upper surface glossy deep green; undersides covered with prominent cinnamon-brown indumentum. Leaves are larger and more widely spaced than dwarf cultivars, producing a bold coarse texture. Evergreen in Zones 7–9; semi-evergreen in protected 6b sites.
Flower Description:
Large creamy white, fragrant cup-shaped flowers 8–10" wide. Thick waxy petals. Blooms appear singly at branch terminals rather than in clusters.
Bloom Time:
Late spring through early summer with occasional sporadic summer rebloom.
Fall Color:
Evergreen; no fall color.
Light Requirements:
Full sun to partial shade. Best canopy density and flowering in full sun.
